Cozy Fantasy in Difficult Times

Enough with the killing and stealing already, I need some gentle kindness.

Cozy Fantasy in Difficult Times

As a designer who has primarily worked on systems and settings centered on realistic drama and literary fiction, I initially found myself hesitant to explore the world of cozy fantasy. However, in recent years, I have come to appreciate the appeal of this genre, particularly during difficult times. Cozy fantasy, sometimes referred to as "cottagecore" or "cozycore," is a subgenre characterized by its emphasis on warmth, comfort, and a slower pace of life. Unlike epic fantasy, which features grand battles, sweeping landscapes, and high-stakes conflict, cozy fantasy focuses on the small, everyday moments that make life feel special.

At first glance, this might seem like a niche genre with limited appeal. However, its popularity has surged in recent years, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In times of uncertainty and stress, people have turned to cozy fantasy as a form of escapism and comfort. It offers a respite from the constant barrage of negative news and the chaos of the outside world. There is a sense of safety and security, even when the characters are facing challenges. The settings are often idyllic, with quaint cottages, lush gardens, and picturesque countryside. The characters are relatable and down-to-earth, and their problems are usually resolved through kindness, compassion, and teamwork.

Cozy fantasy also allows us to connect with nature in a way that is increasingly rare in our modern, urbanized world. The genre often features themes of self-sufficiency, sustainability, and a connection to the natural world. Characters might spend their days tending to a garden, foraging for herbs, or caring for animals. In doing so, they forge a deeper connection with the earth and with themselves.

I have found that cozy fantasy presents unique challenges and opportunities. On the one hand, the emphasis on small moments and everyday life can make it difficult to create a compelling narrative arc for players used to the murder hobo paradigm. On the other hand, the genre's focus on character relationships and interpersonal dynamics offers a rich source of storytelling potential that is entirely what I’m about.

What I have come to appreciate about cozy fantasy is its ability to offer a sense of comfort and optimism. While I still have a deep love for realistic drama and literary fiction, I have found that cozy fantasy offers a different kind of experience that can be just as rewarding. I look forward to exploring this genre further going forward and discovering new ways to capture its unique charms.
